Today is Transgender Day of Remembrance.
This is the day we set aside to mourn those in our trans community lost to violence. They are mostly trans sisters of colors. On Sunday, my St Thomas Church set aside their usual Holy Eucharist to observe this day as a space of lament and repentance.
I had the privilege of preaching - from my own trans nonbinary experience - about how we have failed these siblings of ours and what we can do better. Each candle on the altar represents the life of one of these trans saints who were murdered this year.
This was probably the hardest sermon I’ve ever preached. It was hard not to rage and scream, hard to be so vulnerable, but I know that is what my work is.
The Church can be a site of oppression for trans folx, but I can also be a place of liberation and healing. I’m proud and grateful to belong to a community that is willing to center trans folx in this way, and to be lovingly lifted up by them to lead the Church into new ways.

It’s #NationalComingOutDay and as always I feel grateful for the privilege of being out & proud in a world that still isn’t really safe for queer folx. Especially queer & trans folx of color.

There’s very little that’s more satisfying than working on knitting while wearing something one has also knit.
I’m currently working on one of my slow fashion wardrobe staples- a sturdy, masculine cardigan. I chose Slade from @brooklyntweed in Shelter Nest. I had intended to cast on over the summer, but I made the shawl I’m wearing instead (slow IS ok). The shawl is my own design, made with Elemental Affects Cormo. I feel good about choosing U.S. wool for my projects, and I’m trying to be conscious of the sustainability of my fiber consumption.
I’ve been thinking a lot this week - the first of @slowfashionoctober -about the difference between what I think I should wear, or want to wear, and what I do wear. This is all tangled up with gender. I spent a lot of years trying to like feminine clothing. And when I came out as transmasc I felt a huge pressure to like tailored clothing and suits and such. There’s a time and a place for that, but really I’m a cozy, casual person and I want to fill my closet with those kinds of garments. Hopefully, this cardigan will be one.

The Brown’s Canyon Wildlife Refuge is a bit of an oasis in this hot, dry landscape. This marshland used to flood seasonally, but the climate has been disrupted by human impacts- namely, the Flaming Gorge Dam. Now, the cottonwood groves are threatened & the Bureau of Land Management is rejuvenating them by planting seedlings. We have such power to alter our environment to suit us, but it’s impossible to foresee the consequences. White colonizers have much to atone for, but I am at least thankful for National Parks and Monuments, which preserve these landscapes for the future.
